NEW LED Chevron VATCS tackles high fatality curve in BC interior
Dorman Varitext were pleased to receive an excellent testimonial from their first ever North American test launch of the Chevron VATCS curve warning sign series. British Columbia Ministry of Transport - Cariboo district have installed the steady burn version of the Chevron VATCS in Clinton BC on Highway 97. This section of highway has a high level of heavy truck traffic 30 to 50% and the curve in question had a high historical incident rate with 12 collisions being recorded during the period 2005 to 2008 equating to an average fatality rate of 1 person per year.
The signs were installed in the fall of 2009 and the feedback and response from all parties involved since has been very encouraging
- LED W-62’s well received by traveling public and RCMP, we have not received any complaints so far
- LED’s have performed 100% , no electrical problems , minimal cleaning required
- LED’s are incredible in the fog -- they are more visible than anticipated
- LED’s are still visible under a skiff of snow but the snow doesn’t seem to stick to all of the signs due to the aspect of the plow blades , so you can generally see at least two of the 3 signs in a storm. The signs in the opposite direction are always visible because they are on the backside of the traffic.
- So far, I consider the LED signs a success. They are a sign product that is consistent with our existing sign designs but they surpass any diamond grade reflective sheeting product.

The Chevron VATCS combines LED technology with reflective diamond grade sheeting and is available in both steady burn or vehicle activated options and can be supplied in sizes in accordance with both the TAC and FHWA MUTCD requirements including the new 2009 edition roundabout chevrons.
