The City of Woodstock Ontario, was the first to identify the advantages of the VATCS technology approach to traffic calming as an alternative to other long term measures. The first installation of VATCS in North America were installed in August 2006 in the City and the chief Traffic Engineer David Creery was keen to ensure that the only world recognized large scale study into Vehicle Activated Traffic Sign Technology TRL548 out of the United Kingdom would translate just as well with Canadian Drivers.
The traffic engineering team has deployed the VATCS at strategically located sites around the city and have been very pleased that the initial speed reduction results are being maintained over a year later. A copy of the initial six month evaluation study may be downloaded at (link to research page report).
David Creery has recently confirmed to council that the figures are still being maintained over 1 year since the VATCS were first introduced and is currently working on plans to introduce additional signs in the future to expand on this continuing success story for the community in south eastern Ontario.
Again as in subsequent North American installations the VATCS additionally brought good PR with a lot of local news attention. The VATCS launch was featured in the Woodstock Sentinel were the City Mayor is pictured as the VATCS go live on Finkle Street.
