SCHOOL ZONE VATCS … a very popular format of VATCS the sign is dual diagram either with dual posted speed limits or with one posted speed limit and the school warning diagram. The operator creates a timetable to coincide with the school peak operating hours and uploads it to the sign via the Bluetooth™ wireless communications from a handheld PDA. Once uploaded the sign requires no further intervention and automatically compensates for seasonal time changes.
The program allows the operator to select a warning display, duration and trigger option for the VATCS. During peak hours of operation the lower speed limit or Mother and Child diagram would be permanently displayed with Slow Down and flashing beacons. Outside of the peak hours the sign would automatically revert to vehicle triggered mode and only presenting a warning to drivers of the normal posted speed limit with slow down when excessive speed is detected.
In this mode the sign can help either enforce a lower speed limit in the zone during peak times or if a lower speed isn't enforced just highlight the school hazard to drivers by displaying the school hazard warning during these peak times.
No responsible driver means to speed in a school zone , but some need reminding , particularly at key times of the school operation. Best driver reaction is attained where drivers are provided with a reasoned common sense warning program which they can relate to and understand the benefits of to both themselves and all School personnel.
