There is a well established relationship between inappropriate speed and road accident levels, with the highest speeds contributing to the higher severity of accident. The ability to identify and analyze the speed distribution is very important .Dorman Varitext have developed a datalogger/scheduler feature which comes as standard on all VATCS/SFD products.
The sign records date, time and speed of every passing vehicle, and stores this in a column separated text log file on an SD memory card on the sign controller. Accurate to +/-1mph.The standard 128MB card can store a log of up to 11 million vehicle hits, which can be expanded if required by adding larger memory cards.
Download of data is conducted via custom DL software running on any handheld PDA or Laptop running a windows operating platform. See main menu opposite. Bluetooth™ wireless communications are employed to allow easy operation from within a 30feet radius of the sign.
The operator may check status, download log, clear log, set real time clock on sign and also upload timetable schedules created using the VAMP desktop timetable software application, allowing the sign to be automated to work against a pre-programmed schedule such as a school calendar or at peak times of road use, such as rush hour etc.
It is standard to practice run the Data logger covertly when sign is first installed allowing a baseline of data to be collected to be matched against any historic data.
The downloaded log file can be opened in any standard data manipulation suite e.g. Microsoft Excel, enabling the user to manipulate raw data to work out average, 85 percentile speeds. Peak times of excessive speeding can be identified from the analysis and this information can be shared with Police to improve targeting and efficiency of police deployment.
Dorman Varitext also offer a data analysis report service where the client may email raw data logs and have reports created on pre-agreed parameters. See sample report download
